I'm not much of a poetry lover, except when it's (intentionally) funny, so I was quite pleased to see these arrive in the mail. There are many, many poems here inspired by varied sources. My favorites, of course, are those that recall Shel Silverstein, Tom Lehrer and the like, but you'll also find parodies of Shakespeare, Sir Walter Raleigh, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and several others. The majority, however, are completely original works. A couple of my favorites from these two books are "Female in Question Finds Her Relationship Consuming" (cannibalism can be such a bother) – which you can read on her
website – and "Pull-Tab Spam", reprinted below:
Take it off, you fleshy hunk –
Not you, Frank, I mean the Spam.
It's got this pull-tab thingie
And just slides out of the can.
Just grab the ring and pull it;
Holy cow! It sure is grand,
And a rush, I must admit;
Who'd have thought such fun came canned.
So take it off, my lovely –
Frank, I mean the Spam, not you –
And show me your pink glory,
Shining with your Spammy goo.
