You may remember that the first issue of John Miers'
Slab (reviewed here back in January) was drawn with Microsoft's Paint program. Well, this new one is hand-drawn and anyone who felt the artwork was too stiff before should be surprised by the organic fluidity on display here. Seriously. The slab characters are more organic and expressive (if you can imagine) and there seems to be near-constant movement in much of the scenery as well. My favorite story of the three (and the best example of this fluidity) is the first, a sci-fi thing inspired by Flash Gordon and the like (there's even a Ming-inspired slab villain). The second story is a funny (or sad, depending on how you look at it) allegory of human existence, from creation to destruction, and the third piece – another pulp tribute – is a crime noir bit starring "Slab Marlowe". This is fun stuff.
