Tanglefoot seemed like a good idea – an all-contributor zine with art, photography, fiction, and poetry – but once I dove in nearly everything was even too dark for my taste. I felt most of the writing was trying too hard and the artwork, though done with obvious talent, was too strong. Some of the finer pieces include "Encounter: A Fragment" by Chris Perry and "Empty Carousel" by Nicole. This is only the first issue so I'm sure there'll be some improvement in the future. There is something worth seeing in this, but your $3 is better spent somewhere else. Certainly if you enjoy reading about cutting, sex, and oddity for the sake of it, this would be the zine for you.
