C-Mac Comix #1 is the first effort from Cameron Clark, a very talented artist and writer who really understands the dynamics of good storytelling. The artwork is competent enough, a bit scratchy here and there, a bit off on perspective in a panel or two, but it flows easily and effectively for the most part, especially during the action sequences. And the scripting is quite excellent.
The story deals with a sinister and all-powerful Canadian Cultural Content Enforcement Agency and their iron grip on the broadcasting industry in that country. If one is not Canadian enough – for instance, the dj in this story who plays waaaayyy too much American music for the Agency's tastes – then that person can expect a visit from a team of highly armed agents... and imprisonment in an indoctrination facility!
The frightening part of all this is... there is a real-life basis for this story! Not that Cameron doesn't take it and spin it for the fantastic, but there is a deeper truth to this story than one would expect from an average sf comic adventure.
C-Mac Comix #1 is a thrilling first comic from a very promising new talent. It will be interesting to see where Cameron Clark goes from here. But wait! – the ending promises a continuation of the saga in a second issue. We'll certainly be looking forward to that!
