The purpose of
Comic Effect, according to its slogan, is to "[Emphasize] the Fun in Reading Comics". And that's just what it does. Mike Hall, Chris Khalaf, Greg Schienke and editor Jim Kingman – this issue's writers – are passionate about the comics they enjoy and their writing is appropriately enthusiastic. Most of those comics happen to be mainstream superhero titles (from the '40s to the present), but there are occasional exceptions (Yoshiharu Tsuge's "Screw-Style", Carl Barks, Keiji Nakazawa's
I Saw It). The nostalgia factor is high, but that's a good thing for those who look back fondly on these sorts of stories. One recurring feature that stands out from issue to issue is Jim Kingman's articles in which he combines travel writing with discussions of what he read during his trips. Check it out.
